Housing Stabilization Fund

100% of donations support our rental assistance program for Community Roots residents

Many households in the Seattle area continue to face housing insecurity and financial uncertainty exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. For those living on low incomes, the financial impacts of the pandemic are far from over.

In December 2022, 6,500 households across the Seattle metro area reported they were very likely to face eviction within the next two months. In January 2023 that number rose to 13,128 households. Families have been forced to make a decision to pay rent or meet other essential needs. To support our neighbors’ financial recovery, we are launching the Housing Stabilization Fund – but we can’t do it without you.

The coronavirus pandemic intensified inequities throughout society, including the housing market. Navigating these challenges nearly three years later without consistent adequate support has caused acute financial, mental health, and physical health challenges. Thousands of Seattle renters continue to sink deeper into debt and drain available resources as they choose each month between rent, utilities, food, and other fundamental needs.

Rapid inflation and the cost-of-living crisis it has magnified, particularly in Seattle, is a heavier burden for individuals and families living on low incomes and those who have been pushed to the margins – people of color, immigrants and refugees, and LGBTQIA+ communities. The discrepancies in wealth and recovery highlight the need to support the housing stability of individuals and families, especially as our communities persevere through the long recovery from the pandemic’s economic impacts.

Cynthia And Son

The effects of COVID-19 have been grave for Cynthia, who has been a Community Roots resident since 2006. The ongoing pandemic caused multiple familial deaths, multiple health crises for Cynthia, and the loss of her job. Like many households, the lack of sufficient and accessible government aid has left Cynthia with growing concern over her financial stability.

“It’s been mentally really, really challenging to go through this pandemic,” Cynthia said.

For more than five years, Community Roots has worked to support residents’ housing stability by running an in-house rental assistance program. Before the pandemic and eviction moratoria, 90% residents who received rental assistance were still stably housed one year later. Since 2020, we administered over $3 million in philanthropic and government rental assistance. Many of our neighbors need continued support that is no longer as earnestly funded as it was at the start of the pandemic.

The incredible outpouring of aid over the past two years tells us that our community shares our vision. Today, we need your help to ensure all our neighbors have secure housing and are supported.
